BIG MACHINE is a five-piece band from British Columbia bringing together psychedelic rock, contemporary songwriting, free improvisation, country and gospel influences, and the deep roots of American folk and Appalachian music. The result is expansive, electric, and difficult to categorize. BIG MACHINE draws on decades of collective experience across folk, roots, jazz, rock, and experimental music.

BIG MACHINE is: Oliver Swain — vocals, banjo, bass Glenna Garramone — vocals, guitar Tyler Lieb — guitar, pedal steel Ashley Wey — keys, vocals Alex Campbell — percussion

The band moves fluidly between tightly arranged songs and collective improvisation, shifting from sparse, almost ancient-sounding passages to dense electric textures and fiercely propulsive grooves.

BIG MACHINE draws on decades of collective experience across folk, roots, jazz, rock, and experimental music. Between them, its members have toured internationally, earned JUNO and Western Canadian Music Award recognition, and performed and collaborated with leading artists from across the roots, folk, rock, and contemporary music worlds.

Appalachian music and the wider folk tradition remain part of BIG MACHINE’s foundation, but never as artifacts to be preserved. Gospel harmony can meet psychedelic guitar; banjo and pedal steel can emerge from a wash of organ and effects; an old musical idea can find itself transformed inside a newly written song.
